A Tapestry of Traditions: Sharing the Soul of Ethiopia

Welcome everyone to our global village festival. I am thrilled to stand here today and share the soul of my homeland. To break the ice, let me start with a question: Have you ever felt like you belonged to a place before even visiting it? Explaining my heritage to you today is no piece of cake because our history is a vast tapestry woven with threads of ancient kings, brave warriors, and silent mountains. My country is not just a spot on a map; it is a living, breathing entity. First, I want to bring up our New Year, which we call Enkutatash. It happens in September when the rain stops and the fields turn yellow with daisies. The whole vibe of the country changes as people celebrate new beginnings. We believe that every end is just a path to a fresh start. Speaking of celebrations, you must check out the Meskel festival. We light a massive bonfire called the Demera. The fire is a symbol of finding the true path. It burns bright, acting as a beacon of hope for everyone in the community. Now, let us talk about the heart of any culture: the food. Cooking a traditional Doro Wat is a true labor of love. It takes hours of stirring onions and spices until they are perfect. We eat together from one large plate using injera. We have a proverb that many hands make light work, and this applies to our feasts too. We share our food through a gesture called Gursha, where we feed one another as a sign of respect and love. If you find the spices too hot, no biggie! We have plenty of honey wine and coffee to help you out. The coffee ceremony is another tradition where we focus on taking it slow. It is a time for neighbors to gather and talk about their day. The people back home are as warm as the morning sun, always ready to welcome a stranger with a smile. Sometimes I get homesick, but I remind myself that home is where the heart is, and today, my heart is here sharing my world with you.
