Maya explained that joining a conversation is all about body language and timing. She pointed to a group nearby that had a small opening in their circle, forming a 'V' shape rather than a closed 'O'. 'That is your golden ticket,' she whispered. 'Wait for a natural pause, make eye contact, and then chime in with a relevant comment.' Leo took a deep breath, walked over, and waited for a lull. When one speaker finished their point, Leo smiled and said, 'Mind if I join you? I couldn't help but overhear your thoughts on the new project.' To his surprise, they stepped back to make room for him. It was a piece of cake once he actually tried. After ten minutes of engaging talk, Leo realized he needed to find the hiring manager before the night ended. He didn't want to just vanish, so he waited for a break in the dialogue. He used a polite exit phrase, saying, 'It’s been a pleasure chatting with you all, but I see someone I need to catch up with. I’ll let you get back to it.' He walked away feeling like a pro. He realized that while social events can be a minefield, knowing how to enter and exit conversations makes the whole process smooth sailing.
