The Heart of the Kitchen

Marcus knew he had to learn the ropes if he wanted to survive in Chef Isabella’s kitchen. It was his first day, and the pressure was on. The pantry was stocked with kitchen staples like flour, sugar, and olive oil. To Marcus, the shelves were as organized as a library, each ingredient in its perfect place. Chef Isabella told him to chop up the onions and carrots for the base of the soup. He worked carefully, trying to stay cool as a cucumber despite the rising heat of the stoves. Next, they had to knead the bread dough by hand. Isabella reminded him that many hands make light work as the other junior cooks joined the table to help. The kitchen soon became a beehive of activity, with steam rising from every corner. Marcus had to whip up a balsamic glaze while keeping an eye on the reduction so it wouldn't burn. Isabella warned him not to get distracted, saying, 'Out of the frying pan and into the fire,' when he almost dropped a hot tray. They began marinating the steaks in a mixture of herbs and garlic to enhance the flavor. The aroma filling the room was absolutely to die for. Marcus learned how to sauté spinach quickly over high heat to keep it crisp. For the final dessert, adding the chocolate shavings was the icing on the cake for a perfect meal. As the orders came in, Marcus felt like he was finally getting the hang of it. At the end of the shift, Isabella smiled and told him he’d be bringing home the bacon in no time.
